Your CAN-to-BLE Bridge for Real-Time Vehicle Telemetry
Nodable is a compact, CAN-to-Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) bridge currently sold in RV systems which allows auxiliary battery systems to connect to mobile apps in real time.
🧹 The Easy Solution
As vehicles become more connected, there is a portion of the market that goes unserved. 3rd party coach builders that take barebone vehicles and customize vehicle experiences need to bridge the vehicle to the user. Nodable allows these organizations bridge the gap between their systems and the user by providing vehicle data to their smart devices. At E1, we've utilized Microchip solutions to wirelessly transport data over the BLE protocol to a users smartphone and provide a fully customized experience with Nodable.
Nodable was built around the Microchip RN4020 module – a BLE module offering a complete Bluetooth stack and low-power radio front end along with a PIC24 microcontroller.
This combination enabled a flexible design: the PIC24 owning the application logic, talking to CAN via MCP2562FD or MCP2515 as needed, while RN4020 handled BLE connectivity. This modular architecture gave engineers control over power management, firmware updates, and robust data buffering before transmitting telemetry over BLE.
Embedded One has produced over 10,000 Nodable units to date with zero reported failures. The design is built with long-term availability in mind and can be rapidly updated to the latest Bluetooth chipset with minimal lead time. Additionally, Nodable is proudly made in the USA, with practically no tariff exposure.
⚙️ Key Features & Technical Highlights
Wireless BLE connectivity handled by RN4020: BLE server mode, simple GATT services for live data access, secure pairing, and low-power operation.
Standalone microcontroller logic via PIC24: processes CAN frames, filters messages, handles request/response commands, and manages power states.
Real-time request/response support: apps can send BLE-based commands to the node, which the PIC relays over CAN to ECUs and returns replies live.
📱 Custom App Development
Embedded One partners with clients to develop fully customized mobile apps for iOS and Android. These applications are tailored to the visual identity, functionality, and technical requirements of each organization. Whether the goal is fleet-wide diagnostics, battery data visualization, or interactive dashboards, Embedded One ensures the software experience matches the high standards of the hardware it accompanies.
🎯 Use Cases: Who Should Use Nodable?
1. Automotive Telematics & Diagnostics
Installable in electric vehicles or hybrid systems, Nodable streams CAN-bus data like battery voltage, current, temperature, cell imbalance, error codes, and more to mobile devices wirelessly. Perfect for fleet managers, EV owners, or service technicians.
2. Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS)
Paired tightly with Embedded One’s BMS products, Nodable brings precise battery metrics to Android/iOS interfaces—ideal for developers and integrators needing a BLE UI for remote battery inspection and trend analysis.
3. Embedded ECU Development & Field Testing
Embedded systems engineers can wire Nodable into prototype CAN networks and use BLE apps to query ECUs, monitor messages during development, and simulate real-world telemetry scenarios—without needing bulky scanners or wired connections.
4. Aftermarket & Telematics Add-ons
Installable as an aftermarket gadget for legacy vehicles, Nodable can provide key CAN-bus data over BLE for dashboards, driver awareness apps, or custom vehicle retrofit projects.
🚀 Why This Architecture Matters
By choosing discrete, tried-and-true components—RN4020, PIC24FJ128GA308, MCP2562FD, MCP2515—Nodable achieves:
Modularity and flexibility – easier to upgrade parts individually or switch between CAN and CAN-FD.
Firmware control – the PIC microcontroller gives full control over message processing, power management, and logic.
Cost predictability – leveraging commodity chips helps manage BOM costs while retaining reliability.
Proven reliability – these components have established track records in automotive and industrial embedded design.
📝 Nodable: The Right Solution
Nodable fills a critical niche: a wireless bridge that brings CAN or CAN-FD data to tablets and smartphones via BLE. Its early-phase design leaned on discrete yet reliable components—RN4020 for BLE, PIC24FJ128GA308 for control logic, and both MCP2562FD and MCP2515 for CAN interfacing.
The result is a flexible, reliable, cost-effective CAN-to-BLE solution tailored for vehicle telemetry, battery systems visualization, diagnostics, and aftermarket adding of telematics to CAN-enabled systems. With a custom Bluetooth app and proven hardware, Nodable unlocks live ECU data right in your hand.
